Southeast Alaska Birding Trail

The New Southeast Alaska Birding Trail Takes Flight

With more than 350 bird species observed throughout Southeast Alaska, it is an ideal backdrop for the new Southeast Alaska Birding Trail.  This virtual trail is an online resource to help bird enthusiasts find the best locations in the region to see an amazing array of birds. The trail was unofficially launched earlier this year and includes 17 communities and over 200 birding sites.  The website offers maps, tips, checklists, and other useful information to help visitors plan their trip. A more official launch and celebration will occur this spring when the birds begin reappearing in large numbers and people start heading outside to find them.

As the region’s largest community with easy access to a diverse set of landscapes and hosting a wide range of bird species, Juneau was an obvious choice for inclusion on the birding trail.  Nineteen of Juneau’s birding sites were selected, including the Airport Dike Trail, Fish Creek Delta, and Twin Lakes. The many birding trail locations highlight different habitats and bird species.  Plus, there are options for bird enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.  Audubon Alaska worked closely with the U.S. Forest Service, Juneau Audubon Society, and many regional bird experts from local communities to create the Southeast Alaska Birding Trail. The trail is available online at Southeast Alaska Birding Trail.  A Southeast Alaska Birding Trail app is currently in the works as part of the next phase of the project.
